Well, we tried but no win this time.
We were one of 11 finalists out of hundreds of entries for The Weepies "Hideaway" music video challenge. Though we didn't get picked as the winner, we did get the highest rating by the viewers.
I suspect that some of my imagery was not conservative or digestible enough. What can I say? I am an artist at heart - given the liberty, my mind knows no borders.
We've had a lot of positive feedbacks and hopefully, the band will grant us permission to enter it into festivals.
No more gambling on contests for this girl for awhile. Time to pay the bills!

I emerge from my cave with a new music video for The Weepies "Hideaway" challenge. I feel this is my best one to date and even if it doesn't win, it has been a great learning experience.
I had never heard The Weepies. I usually listen to independent music on
3WK.com. Alexandra, who was the lead for "Monkey" music video, sent me the link. I didn't think I could come up with anything worthy in one month but I decided to torture myself anyway. As usual, the treatment was a stream of consciousness and it ended up having an intricate layers of metaphors and allegories.

Originally, I planned to shoot on location to save myself post production time ("Monkey" took almost 300 hours) since I only had a month to finish the video. When I did the budget, which did not included the pay for cast and crew, it was more than what I had made this year so far (now you know I make way below poverty level). In the end, I decided to shoot green screen in my 8ft basement again. It saved $1,000 on budget and a whole production day. But this meant, I would be spending lot more time on post than I wanted to.

We shot 2 weeks before the deadline. I was having doubts. My usual cinematographer, Christopher Covel, was not available and my backup, Brad Reeb was only available for 1 of the production date. It's always nice working with new people but established good work relationship is priceless. But everything went OK. We shot on Panasonic HVX but I had lot more work cut out for post than expected. Mainly due to the fact that, we shot in a space not right for green screen and I had to be director, AD, art director, still photographer, caterer... the usual.

Originally, the green screen images were to be composited with live background plates. But when Alex mentioned that her boyfriend, David "Godzilla" was an artist and would like to help out, I gave it a second thought. It turned out to be the saving factor for the video. By having drawings, it made the video look more original, interesting and re-enforced the fantasy story.

A week before the deadline, I was glued to my computer chair whenever possible. I became a machine, ignoring the aching back and swollen wrist. I slept very little and even after the deadline, I had insomnia for 3 days. It's like going through any abuse and takes time to recover. I probably should not put myself through such physical damage but I thrive on deadlines and challenge.
